This vegetation type is dominated by Batrachium circinatum, an aquatic macrophyte which possesses only submerged leaves. It occurs in mesotrophic to naturally eutrophic, still, clear and well insolated water which rarely or never dries out. Habitats include fishponds, flooded sand or loam pits, deep oxbows and alluvial pools in early stages of terrestrialization. This association occurs in lowland and colline areas, but it is not common due to its requirements for high water transparency.
