The class Salicetea purpureae comprises Euro-Siberian azonal communities of willow scrub and willow or willow-poplar forests occurring along stream banks and on regularly inundated floodplain sites. The herb layer consists of a group of floodplain species typical of both open habitats and the herb layer of woody vegetation; usually it does not contain forest specialists.
