This vegetation includes stands of annual succulent halophytes of the genera Salicornia and Suaeda in both maritime and inland salt marshes. They usually occupy those sites within the salt-marsh complexes that have the highest salt concentration. The soils are flooded or at least wet in spring, and dry out in summer. Many vernal pools have been drained and subsequently converted to agricultural land in Central Europe, and with them, most of the historically reported inland communities of Thero-Salicornietea in this region have disappeared.
