This alliance includes sand grasslands dominated by tussock-forming, narrow-leaved species of the genus Festuca, in particular F. brevipila and F. ovina. In the successional series of sand grasslands, they follow the initial vegetation of the Corynephorion canescentis on moving dunes. They develop on consolidated sandy soils with higher humus and fine soil particle content. The vegetation of this alliance is found in sandy areas of the Central European lowlands, most commonly in northern Germany and Poland.
