This alliance includes vegetation of free-floating macrophytes, which are much larger than those dominating in the other alliances of the class Lemnetea. It occurs in shallow water bodies in an advanced stage of terrestrialization. Due to limited incidence of floods in the floodplains of regulated rivers, shallow alluvial water bodies dry out or terrestrialize quickly, and some associations of this alliance are in decline.
